- Killing Joke “Asteroid” from Killing Joke (2003)

I definitely forgot how hard this album fucking rules. Killing Joke are an English punk band who have been around since the dawn of the 80’s. They’ve never made a huge splash in the states but they’re revered overseas.

Despite once nearly suing the band for allegedly stealing a riff for “Come As You Are” (the lawsuit was dropped upon Cobain’s death), Killing Joke enlisted Mr. Dave Grohl himself (an avid fan) to provide drums for their self-titled 2003 effort.

The result is one of my favorite drum records of all time, bar-none. Grohl rapes/pillages/annhilates/destroys/massacres/rampages his kit throughout the entire record. The whole album is a must-listen but specific key tracks include “Blood on Your Hands” “The Death & Resurrection Show” “Loose Canon” and “Seeing Red.”

- HAIM “Forever” from Forever EP

HAIM (correct pronounciation rhymes with “time”) is a group of three young sisters and a fellow, non-related male drummer. So far they only have the Forever EP to their name, which contains their big breakout track “Forever” along with two other totally bitchin’ songs.

If you’re all about this 80’s pop revival then HAIM is the equivalent to a female version of new sensation Twin Shadow. The EP’s other two tracks “Better Off” and “Go Slow” are just as stellar. This band’s debut album will most definitely blow up.

Kudos to Alison Brie for suggesting them to me.
